Supporting RAF medical personnel through bespoke on demand yoga classes

The RAF Central Fund has launched a new initiative to support serving medical personnel through the provision of bespoke online yoga classes on the digital workout platform FitSwarm.

Recognising the need to help support RAF doctors and nurses following a particularly tough 18 months where they have been helping on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic, the pre-recorded classes offer an opportunity for all RAF medical staff to relax and destress at a time that suits them.

The Central Fund’s CEO, Ross Perriam says, “Following a consultation with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine it became apparent that a lot of medical staff were unable to attend or stream live fitness classes due to their working hours. There was also a desire to do an activity that would help them decompress at the end of their shift or during their time off.

“Having already trialled the FitSwarm platform at RAF High Wycombe and RAF Coningsby, we knew we could use it to record and offer online yoga classes to those who couldn’t attend the live offerings. We hope our medical personnel will benefit from these classes and if popular we will look to offer something similar to all serving RAF personnel.”

In total, 11 bespoke yoga classes have been designed and recorded with yoga practitioner Gillian Reeves. Gillian, who has been practicing yoga since 2012, has designed the classes specifically for medical staff with an emphasis on restorative, relaxing, calming and decompressing exercises. The classes are free to stream on the FitSwarm platform and all medical staff in the RAF will receive a notification on how to access them.

FitSwarm is a relatively new platform that provides a mixture of pre-recorded and live-streamed workout sessions, which are tailored to the needs of a particular group.

FitSwarm CEO, Tony Beim, says: “In developing FitSwarm, we’ve really embraced feedback from our customers – as a result, FitSwarm provides unique features which make the classes more engaging, such as 2 views of the instructor and extra privacy controls.

“FitSwarm’s technology allows employees of all ages and abilities to engage in a supportive environment which enhances their wellbeing. You don’t need to be a typical gym-goer to participate in FitSwarm sessions – in fact, most of our happiest participants seldom visit a gym.”
