The RAF Winter Sports Nordic Association offers the unique opportunity to sample one of the most physically challenging and enjoyable of the winter sports. Nordic Skiing in the RAF encompasses the separate international winter sport disciplines of biathlon, and cross country skiing.
Biathlon is a unique winter sport that combines skiing and rifle shooting. It requires athletes to alternate between skiing over a set distance and stopping at designated shooting ranges to shoot targets. This sport tests both physical endurance and precision under pressure.
Cross-country skiing takes place on flatter, more varied landscapes, offering a full-body workout and the chance to enjoy scenic winter landscapes.
In the winter, complete novices can find themselves fully able to represent the RAF at a variety of respected competitions all over Europe. During the summer, we use roller skis that simulate the Nordic skiing techniques, and we represent the RAF in competitions across the UK.
