RAF Small Arms

RAF Small Arms Association

The Royal Air Force Rifle Association was founded in 1921 with the objective, as expressed at the time, of “promoting interest in small arms shooting for service purposes by means of individual and collective competitions framed as far as possible to induce practice in methods which will lead to increased efficiency in these arms.”

Since 1946, when it became the Royal Air Force Small Arms Association, it has also been responsible for sporting shooting disciplines as well as competition shooting with service weapons. This expansion allowed the Association to embrace a wider range of shooting activities, supporting both military preparedness and the enjoyment of shooting sports among its members.

The aim of the RAF Small Arms Association today remains largely unchanged: “to promote military efficiency by fostering interest in small arms shooting by means of individual and collective competitions, thereby raising the standard and efficiency in the use of small arms.” This steadfast commitment ensures that personnel are proficient in handling and using small arms, a crucial skill for military operations.

The Association’s activities include organising regular training sessions, competitions, and events that cater to all skill levels. These events are designed not only to improve marksmanship but also to build camaraderie and esprit de corps among participants. By engaging in these activities, members develop their shooting skills in a competitive yet supportive environment, enhancing their overall competence and confidence with small arms.
