Retrospective caps for all Rugby Union Women’s Inter Service appearances

The RAF Rugby Union (RAFRU) was established in 1919, with the men’s team flying solo for 84 years before a women’s team (RAFRUW) was formed in 2003.

Women’s caps, however, were not introduced for another five years. A disparity that has now been acknowledged by rugby unions from all three Services, announcing that they will be retrospectively awarding caps for previous Inter Service women’s competitions.

The announcement means that every Inter Service Championship dating back to 2003 will be recognised as a capped game in its own right. This brings the history of the Senior women’s team in line with the men’s and marks a significant step forward for women’s sport in the Services.

To honour the foundational and current players, a dinner and awards ceremony will take place at the Victory Services Club on 25 May 2024 in celebration of this momentous occasion. Fourteen retrospective caps will be awarded to women who have represented the RAF in fixtures from 2003 onwards, alongside nearly 100 serving personnel and affiliates from across the Service who make up the RAFRUW family.

Speaking about the women’s game and noting the Fund’s support over the years, Squadron Leader Louise Langton said, “Throughout the duration of RAFRUW, the RAF Central Fund has been at the forefront of support for players. Funding for essential kit and equipment through both individual and group Sports Grants has allowed for the continued progression of women’s rugby. By helping to provide the best nutrition, recovery equipment, and personal kit for players, the Fund has cultivated a platform for future success in the women’s game.”
